Council of Europe accepts Commission's plan to establish European center for suicide prevention
In the heart of Germany, the state capital of Wiesbaden is taking a stand against a pressing issue – suicide. With the number of suicides in Germany reaching over 10,000 in 2023, and approximately 28 people dying by suicide daily, the city is making a concerted effort to address this concern.
The World Health Organization (WHO) underscores the importance of societal involvement in suicide prevention, and Wiesbaden is heeding this call. The city is participating in the nationwide action day for World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th.
For those aged 18 and above, the Social Psychiatric Service (SpDi) and the Coordination of Community Psychiatry at the Health Department in Wiesbaden offer further support. These services provide a safety net for those facing difficult life situations, mental illnesses, or addiction, as well as their relatives. Professionals such as psychologists, social pedagogues, social workers, and psychotherapists specialized in behavioral therapy and psychosocial counseling are among those who consult and support these psychosocial centers.
Low-threshold aids like retreats, psychosocial services, understandable information, and inclusion in daily life can provide relief. Numerous self-help groups offer specific services for those affected and their relatives dealing with mental challenges. Interested individuals can contact the self-help contact point of the Wiesbaden Health Department for more information.
People with invisible disabilities, such as autism, ADHD, depression, FASD, or chronic neurological disorders, are often at particular risk. It's crucial to remember that everyone, regardless of their visible or invisible challenges, deserves support and understanding.
In times of crisis, the telephone counseling service 0800 1110111 or 0800 1110222, www.telefonseelsorge.de, is available. This service is a lifeline for those in need, offering a listening ear and guidance during difficult times.
The Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the HELIOS Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinics, located at Ludwig-Erhard-Straße 100, 65199 Wiesbaden, is another resource for those seeking help. The Vitos Clinic Eichberg, Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, located at Kloster-Eberbach-Straße 4, 65346 Eltville, and the Psychosocial Centers Mitte, Ost, and Süd, each located in various parts of Wiesbaden, also offer essential services.
Citizens with questions can contact the Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden, located at Schlossplatz 6, 65183 Wiesbaden. Together, we can work towards a society that fosters understanding, support, and hope for those struggling with mental health issues.
