Countries from around the globe are seeking to dispatch forces to Ukraine.
The Czech Republic, Lithuania, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Slovakia, Italy, Cyprus, Poland, Austria, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary have expressed their willingness to support peace in Ukraine through various means, but have declined to deploy troops at this time.
In a recent discussion, France and Britain expressed readiness to deploy several thousand soldiers as part of a potential peacekeeping force. Denmark, Estonia, and Lithuania have already made a commitment to the deployment. However, Germany is yet to commit to participation.
The proposed force is intended to secure peace and send a strategic signal, not to wage war against Russia. Russia, on the other hand, has stated that it is prepared to continue the war if no agreement is acceptable to Moscow.
The deployment could include ground troops, forces in the air, or at sea for support. The specific countries participating, their contributions, and the number of soldiers were not disclosed in Paris. The Netherlands have stated they could provide help in the air, at sea, and on land. Sweden is ready to secure peace in Ukraine through airspace surveillance and from the sea.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte defended ongoing plans for European troops in Ukraine after a potential ceasefire with Russia, stating that it does not matter that Moscow opposes such a troop presence. Ukraine is a sovereign country, and it is not up to Russia to decide on troop presence.
Financing, armament, and training of the Ukrainian armed forces are priority concerns for Germany. Strengthening the Ukrainian army after the end of the war is described as the most important element of security guarantees for Ukraine. Concrete promises from the USA regarding support for the security guarantees are still pending.
The main burden of a deployment would be carried by the European NATO members. The force will be deployed within the framework of a ceasefire, not on the front line, in areas yet to be determined.
It is important to note that 26 western countries are prepared to deploy troops to secure a ceasefire or peace between Russia and Ukraine. However, some countries have refused participation, such as Greece, Hungary, Austria, and others, with Germany still undecided on troop deployment but committed to supporting Ukraine with weapons and training.
Russia rejects Western considerations for security guarantees, including the deployment of troops from NATO countries in Ukraine. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity are at stake, and the international community continues to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
