Country in Grief Over Phoebe Asiyo, a Pioneer Advocating for Women's Rights and Social Equality

Phoebe Asiyo, a trailblazing figure in Kenya's women's movement, passed away on July 16, 2023, in North Carolina, USA. Known for her advocacy for women's rights, gender equality, and political participation, Asiyo left an indelible mark on Kenya's political landscape.

As a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Karachuonyo Constituency in the 1970s and 1990s, Asiyo was instrumental in advancing the two-thirds gender rule aimed at increasing women's representation in elective offices. She was also the first African chairperson of the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO), where she championed economic empowerment, education, maternal health, and social reforms for women.

Asiyo's achievements extended beyond her political career. She served as a global voice for African women via roles with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) as UNIFEM ambassador from 1988 to 1992. During this time, she led advocacy against poverty, HIV/AIDS, and harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation.

One of her most significant contributions was the 1997 affirmative action motion in Kenya's Parliament, which laid the foundation for greater inclusivity of women in governance. This motion, recalled by Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo, paved the way for increased political participation by women in Kenya.

Asiyo's legacy is not limited to politics. She was revered as a pioneer who taught leadership through dignity and quiet strength, shaping a legacy of social justice and empowerment. Her influence extended to peacebuilding and community leadership, as evidenced by the rise of women leaders in regions she inspired, including Homa Bay County.

In 2018, the State awarded Asiyo the Order of the Burning Spear, one of Kenya's highest honours, in recognition of her enduring contribution to gender equality, girls' education, and social justice. Her influence extended beyond Kenya's borders, as she worked with the United Nations and several development agencies to combat poverty, HIV/AIDS, and harmful cultural practices.

June Asiyo, the daughter of the late Phoebe Asiyo, spoke about her mother's insistence on her admission to a previously all-white institution, Maxwel. This incident underscores Asiyo's unwavering commitment to breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women.

At her memorial service, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, former MYWO chairperson Zipporah Kittony, Gilgil MP Martha Wangari, Senator Margaret Kamar, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda, Migori County MP Fatuma Mohammed, and Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris were among those present.

Sifuna called for the inclusion of more women in decision-making and agenda-setting roles in the country, affirming that women bring a lot of progress when involved. Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang noted that six out of twelve peace leaders in Homa Bay County are now women, a legacy he said, of Asiyo's belief in quiet but firm leadership.

June Asiyo emphasized the need for women leaders to carry forth Phoebe Asiyo's legacy and represent the people of Kenya with passion and courage. Asiyo leaves behind a legacy that will echo for generations, remembered for the deep love she shared for her family and those around her.

Speakers at the memorial service described Asiyo as a movement and an institution, not just a politician. Her influence will continue to inspire Kenya’s ongoing struggle for women's empowerment and equality.
