Country's status remain uncertain as Commission yet to get updates.
In the aftermath of the tragic knife attack at the Solingen city festival on August 23, 2024, the Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf is preparing for a verdict in the trial of the accused, Issa al Hasan. The 27-year-old Syrian stands charged with triple murder, ten counts of attempted murder, and membership in the terrorist organization ISIS.
Issa al Hasan's religious beliefs hardly played any role in his actions, as reported. However, it has been established that he actively worked to have the terrorist organization IS claim responsibility for the attack. The defendant has attempted to portray himself as a victim, claiming to have been influenced by a chat partner.
The court's verdict could result in a life sentence or subsequent preventive detention for Issa al Hasan. A psychiatric report presented in court states that Issa al Hasan's measured IQ of 71 is below average, but no mental illness or reduced criminal responsibility was found in him, according to forensic expert Professor Johannes Fuß.
Professor Fuß has warned of a high risk of recidivism for Issa al Hasan, citing general risk, radicalization, lack of empathy, and a strong fascination with violence as contributing factors. Despite these concerns, the psychiatric report confirms that Issa al Hasan can be tried and punished like any other criminal.
Issa al Hasan has admitted to the knife attack at the Solingen city festival. The attack was carried out purposefully and deliberately, as confirmed by the evidence. The defendant also revealed that he prays rarely, smokes, and watches pornography.
As the trial nears its end, the assessment of Issa al Hasan's mental state is crucial for determining his accountability for his actions. A verdict is expected in the coming week.
