An Oakland County couple celebrated an unforgettable wedding anniversary after striking it rich with a Michigan Lottery's Diamonds & Gold scratch-off ticket. The couple bagged one of the top prizes from the game, worth a staggering $2 million. The winning ticket was purchased at Opdyke Featherstone Mobil in Auburn Hills, leaving only one top prize of $2 million still up for grabs.
The victory of the anonymous 44-year-old woman marks the latest and penultimate top prize in the popular $20 instant game. At the Lottery headquarters, she opted for receiving the winnings as a lump cash sum, increasing her bank account by approximately $1.3 million. The couple has plans to invest some of their winnings, buy a house, and save some money for their children's college funds.
Suzanna Shkreli, the Michigan Lottery's Commissioner, expressed her excitement for the lucky pair. "This winning couple can look forward to a life-changing $2 million payout on their special day," she commented, adding, "We are delighted to learn that the prize will positively impact their children's education as well."
Speaking to a Michigan Lottery official, the fortunate winner reminisced about the exhilarating moment on their anniversary. "We scratched off the ticket together on our wedding anniversary, and my husband spotted the '2MIL' first. He thought there was a mistake, so we took it to the store to scan it," she said, adding that the store requested they file a claim with the Michigan Lottery. After verifying via the Lottery app, the woman broke into shocks of excitement at the sight of $2 million on the screen.
The Diamonds & Gold instant game offers prizes ranging from $5,000 to $20. As of now, 20 $5,000 prizes and over 100 $2,000 prizes remain available for prospective winners. The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.64 for this game, with approximately $49 million in prizes still in play across various tiers.
