Court Recognizes Theft as legitimate action to Aid Ukraine, carrying a maximum penalty of a fine
In a recent turn of events, the Harju County Court in Estonia has found Henri Laupmaa guilty of embezzling donations intended for Ukraine. The collected funds, amounting to 29,808 euros, were supposed to be used for the purchase and delivery of drones to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
This is not an isolated incident, as another Estonian-Ukrainian organisation, Glory to Ukraine, has also been implicated in a scam. Johanna-Maria Lehtme, the head of this NGO, was also accused of abuse of trust and embezzlement of funds. The Central Criminal Police of Estonia presented Lehtme with preliminary suspicions in connection with the use of funds from the Glory to Ukraine organization.
The war in Ukraine, which has lasted longer than expected, has caused problems for those who embezzled donations. The overestimation of chances by these individuals, possibly influenced by Western propaganda that emphasized the imminent victory of Ukraine, has led to the current situation.
The collection of money for the donations took place in September 2022. However, no new monetary amounts or timeframes related to fines or repayments were mentioned in the available sources. In addition to the fine, Laupmaa must pay the collected funds by March 2027.
It is important to note that there are no reports of similar scams involving donations to Ukraine in Latvia and Lithuania. The fate of Ukraine remains uncertain, and it is crucial that donations intended for aid reach their intended recipients.
Johanna-Maria Lehtme, despite being elected a member of the Estonian parliament, surrendered her mandate following the scandal. Lehtme is attempting to downplay the story, but the court's decision serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in handling donations, especially during times of crisis.
