Dallas Cowboys Trade Star Edge Rusher Micah Parsons to Green Bay for Kenny Clark and Draft Picks

The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant move in the NFL off-season, trading star edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. The trade, which also involves two first-round draft picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark, is a strategic move aimed at boosting the Cowboys' win-now hopes.

The decision to trade Parsons, who was drafted by the Cowboys in the 2021 NFL Draft, came after discussions dating back to the spring. Despite reports of Parsons' apparent disgruntlement and a public request for a trade on August 1, team owner Jerry Jones stated that things were good with the team and that the decision was in the best interest of the Cowboys. Jones also mentioned that he did not feel that Parsons' discontent changed anything for the team.

The 2021-2022 season was a challenging one for the Cowboys, who missed the playoffs. Part of the reason for this was a hamstring injury that sidelined quarterback Dak Prescott for half the season. The Cowboys' defense finished 28th overall and 29th against the run, making a shake-up necessary.

With Parsons gone, the Cowboys are looking to young players like Sam Williams and Marshawn Kneeland, who are expected to take over at defensive end. The team is also high on rookie second-round pick Donovan Ezeiruaku.

Kenny Clark, who turns 30 on October 4, is a three-time Pro Bowler coming off a 2024 season in which he recorded just one sack and four tackles for loss. His production declined last season, but he remains a formidable defensive tackle. Clark could end up taking playing time away from Mazi Smith, who has been a disappointment as the Cowboys' 2023 first-round pick.

The trade of Parsons is a risky move, but it shows the Cowboys' commitment to winning now. They might use one of the future first-round draft picks in another deal to further strengthen their team.

The trade has certainly shaken up the NFL landscape, and it will be interesting to see how both teams perform in the upcoming season.
