"Crazy Turn of Events": Former HSV Talent (age 18) owed a favor to an opponent - saves Werder from a lost point

In a thrilling Bundesliga encounter, Werder Bremen managed to salvage a point against Bayer 04 Leverkusen after a rollercoaster ride of a match.

The game started on a high note for Leverkusen, with Patrick Schick, a key player from their 2024 champion team, scoring the opening goal in the fifth minute. Malik Tillman, the US national player who recently joined from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, made it 2:0 for Leverkusen in the 35th minute.

However, the tide began to turn in Werder's favour after a series of mistakes by Leverkusen's new goalkeeper, Mark Flekken. A video review awarded Werder a penalty, which Romano Schmid converted to make it 1:2 just before halftime.

The second half was no less dramatic. Leverkusen's instability was evident as they conceded the equalizer in the fourth minute of injury time. Eighteen-year-old Werder defender Karim Coulibaly, who was given his debut by the new coach, Horst Steffen, scored the crucial goal.

The Weser Stadium erupted in celebration as Coulibaly's equalizer saved Werder from Leverkusen's comeback. Despite being a man down after Werder captain Niklas Stark was sent off for fouling Christian Kofane in the 63rd minute, Werder managed to hold on.

The game was turbulent, with Christian Kofane hitting the bar and Marco Grüll having two good chances in injury time of the first half. Leverkusen's Schick scored again from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, but it was not enough to secure a win for the struggling Leverkusen side, who are currently in crisis, having drawn 3:3 with Werder after leading 3:1.

Horst Steffen, who kept Coulibaly in the team despite his mistake leading to the opening goal, expressed trust in his players and stated that he always shows this. Mio Backhaus is expected to be Werder's future starting goalkeeper, while Alexander Schwolow is being pursued as the backup goalkeeper. Michael Zetterer is expected to transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt soon.

The game was marred by injury problems and transfer delays for Werder, who had hardly any chances in the game, with only two shots from Justin Njinmah and Marco Grüll. Despite the setbacks, the young players showed resilience and determination, which was praised by former HSV coach Mirko Slomka.

Meanwhile, Piero Hincapié, an Ecuadorian defender, is expected to join Arsenal this weekend, adding to the speculation surrounding Werder's transfer market activities.

The cancellation of a test match related to Werder running out of players was not a standalone fact about the game against Leverkusen, but it underscores the vicious cycle of injury problems and transfer delays that Werder is currently facing.
