Cricketer Amit Mishra announces his retirement from the sport, hanging up his boots after a successful 25-year career.
Amit Mishra Hangs Up His Cricket Boots: A Glittering Career in Retrospect
After a illustrious career spanning over two decades, Indian cricketer Amit Mishra announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on September 4, 2023. The leg-spinner, who last played for Lucknow Super Giants in the 2024 IPL season, leaves behind an impressive legacy in the game.
Mishra made his debut in first-class cricket back in 2000 and went on to claim a staggering 535 wickets. His impact was equally profound in the shorter formats, where he racked up 285 wickets in T20 cricket and 252 wickets in List A cricket.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mishra represented four teams - Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). His career statistics in the IPL include 166 wickets, 166 matches, and a best bowling figure of 6/19. Mishra is the only bowler to claim three hat-tricks in the IPL.
Mishra's IPL journey began with Delhi Daredevils in 2008. He then moved to Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and finally to Lucknow Super Giants. His last competitive game was for LSG in the 2024 IPL season.
In international cricket, Mishra made his Test debut against Australia in 2008 and represented India in 22 Tests, claiming 76 wickets. He also played 10 T20 Internationals and 36 One Day Internationals, taking 64 and 66 scalps respectively.
Mishra's retirement statement was filled with deep gratitude towards various entities, including the BCCI, the Haryana Cricket Association, his support staff, colleagues, family members, and fans. He expressed a keen desire to stay involved in the game via coaching and commentary.
Mishra's international career slowed once Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja emerged as formidable spinners. However, he will always be remembered for his exceptional performances, including his five-wicket haul in his first Test innings and his three hat-tricks in the IPL.
Mishra's retirement was attributed to repeated injuries and a belief that the younger generation should take over. As he hangs up his cricket boots, Mishra leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire future cricketers.
