Crowds gather for favorite flicks as Armaments and, indeed, Jaws Lead the laid-back Labor Day cinema scene
This Labor Day weekend, audiences flocked to the cinemas, with a surprising turnaround for Warner Bros. and a preference for familiar films taking centre stage.
In the top spot remains Weapons, continuing its reign at the box office. Early estimates predict that it will earn more than other films this weekend, proving to be a crowd favourite.
In second place, the re-release of the classic shark-filled thriller Jaws (50th anniversary) grossed an impressive $8.1 million, showcasing the timeless appeal of Steven Spielberg's iconic film.
The long-delayed remake of The Toxic Avenger opened its weekend with similar numbers to Cineverse's 2022 hit, Terrifier 2, earning $1.7 million. Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman, who also shepherded a young James Gunn, could be the first unsung hero of the new superhero era.
The Roses, a remake of the 1980s comedy, earned $6.4 million, landing in fifth place. Meanwhile, The Naked Gun took the tenth spot.
Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing came in third at $7.8 million. The film, produced and directed by Aronofsky, offers a departure from the usual blockbuster fare.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman rounded out the top eight, with Superman in eighth place.
Freakier Friday took fourth place, while Bad Guys 2 found itself in seventh.
Notably, Weapons, Sinners, and Superman delivered more than just thrills, chills, and spills. They also served as conversation starters, sparking debates and discussions among moviegoers.
As the summer movie season comes to a close, it seems that audiences are still eager to enjoy the comfort of familiar films, making this Labor Day weekend a successful one at the box office.
