Cult's Deer Henry Bids Adieu: Initially Drugged, Then Relocated
In the picturesque town of Bad Bergzabern, located in the South Palatinate region, a new resident has made an unexpected arrival. Known affectionately by the locals as "Henry", a fallow deer has been causing a stir since it first appeared in the gardens of Budesheim, Germany, back in July.
After weeks of eluding capture, animal keeper Josephine Bauer embarked on a mission to bring Henry home. Travelling over 200 kilometres from Bad Bergzabern, Bauer and her team pursued Henry through several streets, eventually cornering him on another resident's property.
The chase ended when Bauer, using a tranquillizer gun, fired a second shot, hitting Henry and allowing her to capture him. Andrea Thome from the neighbouring Birresborn rushed over to witness the momentous event.
Henry, now almost 130 kilograms, was carefully carried several hundred meters to the transporter. Upon waking up, he was given an antidote and untied, ready for the journey to his new home.
Despite initial concerns, Bauer explained that Henry was a bit dazed but would be fine. True to form, Henry wasted no time in exploring his new enclosure upon arrival in Bad Bergzabern.
Bauer's connection with Henry goes back years, as she found him as a calf in a goat enclosure in the woods. After raising him, Henry eventually broke free, beginning his journey that led him to Budesheim.
Fallow deer are not native to the Eifel region, and according to the law, they must be shot. However, Bauer, with a heart for animals, chose to give Henry a new home instead.
