In the face of the ongoing challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, the teachers' union GEW in North Rhine-Westphalia is advocating for adjustments to teaching plans. Maike Finnern, GEW's state chairwoman, has highlighted the difficulties in maintaining regular, concentrated teaching due to ventilation and mask-wearing requirements.

Finnern has proposed a potential solution to this issue by suggesting a weekly shift model. Under this model, half of the students would be taught in class while the other half would receive homework. This approach aims to reduce the number of students in class at any given time, thereby facilitating a safer learning environment.

The Robert Koch Institute, Germany's federal disease control and prevention agency, has also recommended shift models in schools when the incidence number reaches 50. This recommendation underscores the need for alternative teaching methods when large gatherings may pose a health risk.

Finnern has further emphasised the need for alternative concepts if it becomes unjustifiable to teach classes with 30 students or more. The political decision-makers responsible for implementing such changes are primarily the Ministry of Education of North Rhine-Westphalia and the respective school district authorities within the state government structure. These actors develop guidelines and enforce policies regarding school operation models, including attendance schemes based on infection control or capacity rules.

The implementation of these changes will undoubtedly have an impact on both teachers and students. However, as the pandemic continues to evolve, it is crucial that we adapt to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved in the educational process.
