Customs Dog Team at Central Customs Office Lörrach honored with distinction: Successful Duo with six legs receives accolade from Customs Dog School of the General Directorate of Customs' Award ceremony
In the picturesque town of Lörrach, Germany, a seven-year-old German Shepherd named "Quincy" and his dedicated team have been making a significant impact. Quincy, along with his two handlers, forms part of the Main Customs Office Lörrach's customs dog team, led by the head of the office, Matthias Heuser.
Quincy's exceptional nose has played a crucial role in numerous drug seizures. In August 2023, during a routine truck inspection, "Quincy" revealed more than 100 kilograms of marijuana hidden under a black-wrapped palette. This was just one of many impressive finds. In January 2025, Quincy helped locate more than eleven kilograms of marijuana in parcel deliveries.
One of Quincy's most significant seizures occurred in April 2021, when he discovered five and a half kilograms of cocaine, 15 kilograms of amphetamine, and around nine kilograms of ecstasy hidden in a vehicle's spare tire. This seizure was one of the largest made by Quincy and showcases his remarkable ability to detect illicit substances.
Quincy is a passive detection dog, making him particularly suitable for direct deployment at humans. When Quincy finds something, he stands still in front of the person or object and fixates on it with his eyes. This behaviour is a clear indication that he has detected something of interest.
The Main Customs Office Lörrach has eight customs dog teams in its area of responsibility, seven of which are trained to sniff out drugs. The eighth, named "Rocky", is trained as a combined tobacco and cash detection dog. Klaus-Dieter Behringer, the full-time customs dog trainer at the Main Customs Office Lörrach, ensures that the teams maintain and further develop their performance level through regular training sessions.
The customs dog team from Lörrach is often involved in public events, where they are often stars and crowd-pleasers. In recognition of their hard work and success, the head of the office, Matthias Heuser, has honoured a customs dog team with a medal on several occasions.

Since completing his training in November 2020, Quincy has been successful in 130 drug searches and has found over 297 kilograms of various narcotics. Quincy's dedication and success make him an invaluable asset to the Main Customs Office Lörrach and the fight against illegal substances.
