Customs Headquarters: Primary Customs Office within the Customs Territory of the Community
On April 3rd, 2025, the Main Customs Office of Brunswick opened its doors to 28 curious children aged 10 to 16, offering them a unique insight into the world of customs. The event, organised by the Press Spokesperson, Dagmar Taeger, was a resounding success, with the children gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of customs work.
The day began with a search of a suspicious vehicle, where the children were tasked with finding weapons, cigarettes, drugs, and other prohibited items. This was followed by a table exhibit showcasing corals, giant clams, snake skin, bear and leopard fur, among other items. The exhibit underscored the customs' role in protecting animals and plants, and enforcing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Throughout the day, the children were given the opportunity to take on various roles, such as prosecutor, witnesses, accused, lawyers, employees, entrepreneurs, and even customs officers. They practiced using handcuffs, radio devices, protective vests, practice irritant spray devices, and were shown drug swab tests, laser devices for document control, and endoscopes for cavity inspection.
In a surprising turn of events, the children were introduced to the diversity of customs work, including animal and plant protection. Role-playing exercises were part of the event, involving a construction site inspection and a court trial. The children also had the chance to unpack packages containing prohibited items and learn about taxable items, seizure of items, and potential revenue from seized items.
The Financial Control of Illegal Work (FKS) unit demonstrated a film-worthy inspection, complete with operational vehicles, equipment, and radio communication. The children were even given a chance to practice unarmed self-defense using punching bags.
Dagmar Taeger expressed her satisfaction with the event and expressed hope for potential future employment of some of the children as customs officers.
