Cycling Traffic Intersections

The Fünferlsteg, a historic pedestrian connection between the old town and Innstadt in Passau, is set for extensive repairs in the near future. Despite no immediate closure being necessary, discussions are underway for a potential comprehensive renovation of the bridge.

Built in 1916 and rebuilt after World War II in 1947, the Fünferlsteg has served as a vital link for over a century. As part of necessary bridge structure renovations, the city is examining whether a replacement construction of the Fünferlsteg as a pedestrian and cycle path is technically feasible and economically sensible.

The Fünferlsteg's renovation and potential replacement construction are being addressed by the Urban Development and Mobility Committee, who are also considering accommodating both pedestrian and future bicycle traffic. This decision stems from the committee's tasking of the administration with examining a crossing for bicycle traffic on September 21, 2021.

A main inspection carried out in 2024 revealed a rating of 3.5, indicating an inadequate condition. This has led to concerns about the stability of the bridge, with damage to the reinforced concrete roadway slab, longitudinal and transverse beams, and in the area of the connection angles of the beams impairing its structural integrity.

Preliminary studies indicate that expanding the existing bridge structure is not feasible due to static and structural reasons. As a result, further planning steps for a possible replacement construction that accommodates bicycle traffic are being initiated.

The Urban Development and Mobility Committee will discuss the Fünferlsteg (pedestrian crossing Innsteg) on February 6, 2025. The architect or construction company responsible for the reconstruction or new construction of the Fünferlsteg in Passau in 1916 and 1947 is not specified in publicly available sources.

The name "Fünferlsteg" derives from the bridge toll and the toll for individual persons being five pfennigs. As the city moves forward with repairs and potential renovations, ensuring the safety and convenience of both pedestrians and cyclists will be a priority.
