Cycling's Second-Ranked Performance in the 2024 Climate Test

The city of Nordhorn has once again proven its commitment to promoting cycling, as it secured second place in the ADFC Bicycle Climate Test 2024. This esteemed survey, conducted every two years, saw the participation of around 213,000 cyclists from all over Germany.

Mayor Thomas Berling, an avid cyclist, was unable to travel to Berlin for the award ceremony due to other commitments. However, Alfred Koelmann, the deputy mayor of Nordhorn, accepted the corresponding award on behalf of the city. The Nordhorn delegation also included deputy council chairwoman Susanne Dittmann, the city's environmental officer Gerwin Rademaker, ADFC Grafschaft Bentheim members Burkhard Werner and Wolfgang Fricke, Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder, and ADFC Federal Chairman Frank Masurat.

Despite slipping from the top spot this year, Nordhorn's overall score remained the same, with an average of 2.83 out of 5. This result demonstrates that Nordhorn continues to be one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in Germany.

The city's environmental officer, Gerwin Rademaker, stated that promoting cycling remains a long-term task. Residents of Nordhorn can participate in an online survey on the cycling concept and specifically name points in the traffic network where they would like to see improvements.

The updated cycling concept from 2017, which is being updated with intensive public involvement, aims to further improve the city's cycling infrastructure. Mayor Thomas Berling stated that the urgently needed traffic turnaround in Germany is a joint task that can never have too many winners.

Meanwhile, the university town of Tübingen took first place in the ADFC Bicycle Climate Test 2024. Bocholt ranked third in the 50,000 to 100,000 inhabitants category, while Nordhorn secured second place in its size category.

Mayor Berling sent his greetings to Tübingen, acknowledging the town's achievement. He also thanked everyone who participated in the survey for the Bicycle Climate Test, expressing his gratitude for their support in making Nordhorn a more bicycle-friendly city.

Nordhorn has consistently placed on the winners' podium in the Bicycle Climate Test for twelve years, a testament to the city's dedication to promoting cycling. The city's commitment to this cause is evident, and its efforts continue to be recognised and celebrated.
