TotalEnergies' Sandy Dujardin Wins Maryland Cycling Classic Amid Challenging Weather Conditions

In a thrilling finish at the Maryland Cycling Classic, French cyclist Sandy Dujardin emerged victorious, out-sprinting Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) and Marius Mayrhofer (Tudor) to claim the top spot.

The race, which took place under wet and slippery conditions, saw numerous incidents including crashes, punctures, and mechanicals as the skies opened up late in the game. Despite the challenging weather, Dujardin remained focused and demonstrated impressive bike handling skills, keeping his bike upright and making the right moves when it mattered most.

Dujardin's winning strategy began when he entered into a large breakaway and went off the front on the final lap. He was joined by a group of six riders during the final lap, and it was during the sprint that he made his move. Dujardin cleverly jumped onto Jonas Abrahamsen's wheel, following closely behind until the final moments when he launched his sprint to take the win.

Although Dujardin is not typically considered a top favourite to win such a race, he demonstrated a strong performance throughout the event. He was aware of Abrahamsen's speed, but was not intimidated by the challenge. In fact, Dujardin had too much tyre pressure for his comfort in the rainy conditions, but he managed to navigate the wet roads with caution and skill.

Interestingly, Dujardin's victory marked the first time that Team TotalEnergies raced on US soil. Dujardin, who is a keen cyclocross racer at the French national level, was the only rider from his team in the large group that went clear. The team's strong showing in the race was also evident in the number of riders they had in the large group, with Uno-X having three riders, Tudor having four, and EF Education-EasyPost having three riders.

Unfortunately for favourites Alex Baudin and Neilson Powless from EF Education-EasyPost, they suffered punctures before the final lap, which ultimately cost them a chance at the win.

In the end, it was Dujardin who emerged victorious, demonstrating a strong will and impressive bike handling skills to take the win in the Maryland Cycling Classic. His performance is sure to be a talking point in the cycling community for weeks to come.
