Daesh-suspected terror assault in Izmir, Türkiye, claims lives of 2 law enforcement officials

In a shocking turn of events, a 16-year-old individual named E.B. carried out a rifle attack on the Salih Isgoren Police Station in Izmir's Balcova district, resulting in the martyrdom of two police officers and the wounding of four others.

The police chief inspector martyred in the clash was Police Chief Inspector Muhsin Aydemir. Another police officer, Hasan Akin, also lost his life in the incident. The martyred police chief was a 1st Class Police Director. Officer Murat Dagli was lightly wounded in the attack, while Omer Amilag was seriously wounded.

Initial reports suggested that E.B. died from injuries sustained during the confrontation, but the Ministry of Interior later stated that this news is not true. The attacker, a third-year high school student, had no criminal record or previous detentions.

The attacker used a rifle his father had purchased 10 years ago. According to investigators, E.B. allegedly posted a message on social media expressing intentions of a suicide attack and sympathies towards the Daesh terrorist organization. However, there is no publicly available or credible information confirming or suspecting a connection between E.B. and Daesh (ISIS). Investigators have not yet determined whether E.B. had direct links with Daesh or local pro-Daesh communities.

Security analysts suggest that while E.B. may not have been a Daesh member, the attack will likely be claimed by Daesh. This incident marks the first time in Turkey that a youth inspired by Daesh has carried out an attack, reflecting a trend seen in Europe.

Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor Ali Yeldan confirmed the casualties at the scene, stating that there are two martyrs and around six wounded. One citizen was lightly wounded in the hand during the clash. The police are currently investigating the incident to gather more information.
