Danger to Canines and Pets in the County from Staupe Virus and Rinderpest in Wildlife
In recent news, our city has been informed about an unsettling rise in mange cases among wildlife, a parasitic disease caused by mites of the genus Sarcoptes. Simultaneously, the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Consumer Protection in the Kassel district has reported an alarming increase in the distemper virus among wildlife, with over 90% of badgers, foxes, and martens infected.
The distemper virus, harmful to animals but harmless to humans, affects various organs in dogs, leading to severe clinical pictures such as lethargy, loss of appetite, high fever, intestinal form with diarrhea and vomiting, pulmonary form with lung infection, and nervous distemper form with behavioral changes, tremors, paralysis, and seizures.
To prevent the distemper virus in dogs, vaccination is considered a core vaccination by the Standing Committee on Veterinary Immunization. Dr. Christina Werner, head of the Animal Disease Control Service, emphasizes the importance of vaccination and advises dog owners to check their animals' vaccination status. Protection from the distemper virus vaccination lasts for one to three years, depending on the vaccine used.
Mange in wildlife can be dangerous for dogs, and transmission mainly occurs through direct body contact. Initial symptoms of mange in wildlife include skin changes in the head area, characterized by pustule and scale formation, which then spread over the entire body surface.
Dog owners are advised to keep their dogs on a leash in the woods and avoid direct contact with wildlife due to the risk of distemper virus transmission. A definitive diagnosis of distemper virus in dogs can only be made in a laboratory.
