Dangerous Cave-In at Religious Site Near Humayun's Tomb in Delhi Results in 6 Fatalities, Multiple Rescues Conducted
In a tragic incident on Friday, a part of the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah structure, adjacent to Humayun's Tomb in Delhi, collapsed due to persistent rain. The rescue operation, initiated after receiving a distress call at around 4:30 pm, was a multi-agency effort involving fire teams, the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Police, and other agencies.
The collapse resulted in at least six deaths and four severe injuries. Rescue crews worked diligently to complete operations swiftly, and survivors received timely medical care. However, the identities and information regarding the injuries of the victims have not yet been made public.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), responsible for overseeing the safety and condition of the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, expressed regret over the tragedy. The ASI emphasised that the collapse occurred in an unprotected, peripheral structure adjoining the historic mausoleum.
Investigators are assessing whether the structure's failure in rainy weather was caused in part by its use without the necessary safety certifications. This raises concerns about building safety, especially considering that even structures near hallowed historical monuments can be vulnerable.
Residents also assisted in the rescue effort, adding to the community's collective response to the crisis. The Sunder Nursery, near Humayun's Tomb in Delhi, is undergoing renovation and development.
Eyewitnesses described a sudden collapse just as people sought shelter from the rain. At least a dozen individuals were transported to hospitals for medical attention. The complete causes of the collapse are still being investigated.
The collapse of the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations, particularly in areas surrounding historical monuments. The ASI reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety and preservation of such sites.
