Dangerous Decision: City Council Outlaws Swimming in the Rhine, Raising Safety Concerns
In a bid to prevent further tragic accidents, the city council of Dormagen has imposed a swimming ban on the Rhine, effective from August 31, 2022. The ban, which is valid until December 31, 2027, prohibits swimming in more than knee-deep water.
The Rhine, a heavily trafficked river with currents, waves, and fluctuating water levels, poses significant risks even for experienced swimmers. According to the First Deputy Mayor and Head of the Ordnance Department, Fritz Bezold, the ordinance provides a clear basis for law enforcement officers to intervene and penalize violations, with offenders facing a fine of up to 1,000 euros.
Mayor Erik Lierenfeld emphasised that the ban aims to prevent underestimation of the Rhine and its currents, which have led to numerous accidents in the past. He stated, "Swimming in the Rhine is very dangerous, and we want to ensure the safety of our citizens and visitors."
The ban applies to all areas in Dormagen city territory, except for measures by authorities or rescue services, exercises and deployments of water rescue services, sports clubs or the fire department, approved events with explicit permission from the city administration, brief entry and exit when boarding and disembarking water vehicles, and fishing in accordance with the applicable regulations.
Interested parties can find the ordinance on the city administration's website shortly. It is worth noting that numerous other cities along the Rhine have already decided to impose the same ban, signifying a collective effort to ensure safety along this major waterway.
The city administration last extended the swimming ban around late August 2025, with a draft regulation for the ban sent to all city council factions on August 25, 2025. The ban was expected to come into effect shortly thereafter to prevent swimming due to safety concerns.
However, it's important to note that the ordinance does not specify any conditions for renewal or extension beyond December 31, 2027, nor does it provide any new reasons or justifications for the ban. Furthermore, dangers exist not only in the river but also in the shore area, highlighting the need for caution and adherence to the swimming ban.
The city administration has not mentioned any plans to revise or modify the ordinance at this time. Visitors and residents are advised to respect the swimming ban and enjoy the Rhine's beauty from a safe distance.
