Dangerous Decree: The City Council Outlaws Swimming in the Rhine River Due to Potential Hazards

The city of Dormagen has announced a swimming ban in the Rhine, effective from August 31, 2025. This decision, based on an urgent call by the city council, has been made due to life-threatening currents and dangers in the river.

The ordinance, which will be published in the official gazette shortly before it comes into effect, prohibits swimming in more than knee-deep water within the city limits. However, there are exceptions to the ban, including measures by authorities, rescue services, sports clubs, approved events with express permission, brief entry and exit when boarding and disembarking watercraft, and fishing in accordance with regulations.

Activities not listed in the exceptions are subject to the ban. It is essential to note that the Rhine is a heavily trafficked river with strong currents, waves, and fluctuating water levels, making it dangerous, even for experienced swimmers.

The Head of the Ordnance Department, Fritz Bezold, explains the ordinance, emphasising that it provides a basis for law enforcement officers to intervene and enforce violations. The offense can be punished with a fine of up to 1,000 euros.

Mayor Erik Lierenfeld stated that the ban aims to prevent further tragic accidents. He encourages residents and visitors to respect the ban and enjoy the river's beauty from a safe distance.

The ordinance is initially valid until December 31, 2027, and can be found online shortly. For more information, the city administration's website is the best place to start. It is important to note that there are dangers in the shore area of the Rhine, and swimming should never be taken lightly.

In conclusion, the swimming ban in the Rhine within the city of Dormagen is a necessary measure to ensure public safety. It is crucial for everyone to follow the rules and regulations to avoid any potential dangers.
