Data leak at TransUnion exposes sensitive information of 4.5 million American clients
TransUnion, one of the three major credit reporting agencies in the United States, has suffered a data breach that has impacted the personal information of nearly 4.5 million Americans. The breach was detected on July 30, two days after it occurred on July 28.
The breach affected a third-party application serving TransUnion's US consumer support operations. According to reports, a 3GB database purportedly containing the personally identifiable information (PII) of 58,505 TransUnion customers was published in September 2023. However, TransUnion has not publicly provided details on the nature of the breached data.
TransUnion takes the protection of personal information seriously and employs robust security measures. The company is now working to enhance its security controls to minimize the risk of any similar incident in the future. Notified customers are being offered free access to credit monitoring and proactive fraud assistance services.
This is not the first time TransUnion has been involved in a data breach incident. In 2022, the company suffered a data breach that involved the theft of personal data of around five million customers in South Africa.
The data breach trend involving third-party compromises of IT and cloud providers continues to grow in frequency. Two cybercriminal groups, Scattered Spider and ShunyHunters, have been linked to a number of attacks that compromise third-party IT and cloud providers.
In a separate incident, insurance firm Allianz Life experienced a data breach affecting 1.4 million US customers in July 2023 due to a third-party, cloud-based CRM compromise. Meanwhile, Australian airline Qantas suffered a data breach affecting nearly six million customers in July 2023 through a third-party customer service platform.
Chain IQ, a procurement service provider, also suffered a data breach impacting banking giant UBS in June 2025. The information accessed did not include credit reports or core credit information.
TransUnion, along with other companies, continues to navigate the complexities of securing personal data in an increasingly interconnected digital world.
