DBB squad delivers heart-warming act in support of ailing coach
In a surprising turn of events, Alex Mumbru, the German basketball national coach, has decided to step back temporarily during the ongoing EuroBasket 2025 tournament due to health issues. However, he has made it clear that he will continue to be involved in the team's strategies.
The announcement of Mumbru's temporary step back was made public in the morning, but it was later removed from the association's homepage in the afternoon. This decision was made following Mumbru's hospitalization shortly before the tournament due to an "acute abdomen," a condition requiring immediate medical treatment and characterized by severe abdominal pain.
Mumbru's first game as coach after returning from hospital was the game against Portugal in the round of 16. Despite his health challenges, he has made significant adjustments to the team's playing style this summer, encouraging a faster and more aggressive approach.
In a media round at this EM, Mumbru admitted that he is not at 100% health, but he remains the head coach of the team and will continue to be involved in the games. His focus remains on the important game against Slovenia on Wednesday.
The player serving as assistant to head coach Alex Mumbru for the German basketball national team is Alan Ibrahimagic. Due to Mumbru’s illness, Ibrahimagic has taken on more responsibility and even stepped in as acting head coach during the tournament. Ibrahimagic praised Mumbru for his decision to step back during the games, stating that it was in the best interest of the team.
The entire German basketball team has expressed their support for Mumbru at a press conference. Maodo Lo, who spoke on behalf of the team, stated that reports of Mumbru no longer being the national coach are not true.
Mumbru took over the national team last year after the Olympic Games in Paris from World Cup-winning coach Gordon Herbert. The World Cup is set for 2027 in Qatar, and Mumbru's goal remains to lead the team to victory in the upcoming games.
Despite the temporary setback, the German basketball national team remains optimistic and focused. Alan Ibrahimagic will be the voice during the games, but the team will work together on strategies, with Mumbru maintaining his role as head coach and providing guidance. The next mandatory game in the World Cup qualifiers isn't until November, giving Mumbru ample time to recover and prepare for the next challenge.
