Deadly boat accident in Nigeria claims at least 60 lives, with scores rescued

A tragic incident occurred in Niger State, Nigeria, on Tuesday morning when a boat carrying over 100 passengers capsized, according to Sa'adu Inuwa Muhammad, the district head of Shagumi. The boat was traveling from Tungan Sule in Malale district to Dugga.

The boat capsized near Gausawa community in Borgu Local Government Area, due to colliding with a tree stump, as stated by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency. The agency confirmed 29 deaths, 50 rescues, and two missing persons.

The casualty figure is rising, according to Abdullahi Baba Ara. As of the latest reports, at least 60 people have lost their lives in the boat capsizing, with many passengers still being sought.

Sa'adu Inuwa Muhammad was at the scene of the boat accident and reported that women and children made up the majority of the deceased. Four victims were buried in accordance with Islamic rites, as per Sa'adu Inuwa Muhammad.

Dozens more passengers were rescued, and ten people were found in serious condition. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency is searching for the victims and has been working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected by the tragedy.
