Debut of Dave Portnoy on 'Big Noon Kickoff' Marks Him as chief antagonist
Dave Portnoy Makes Debut on Fox's College Football Pregame Show, Rooting for the Big Ten
Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, made his debut on Fox's college football pregame show "Big Noon Kickoff" this weekend, marking a new partnership between the sports media company and the network.
In a smoke-filled entrance, Portnoy, a Michigan alumnus and diehard football fan, donned a 'B1G' hoodie as he stepped onto the set in Columbus. The grand entrance was met with a mix of excitement and boos from Ohio State fans, who have a history of defeating Michigan, notably last season with a score of 13-10 in Columbus.
Upon his arrival, Portnoy started singing the Michigan fight song, 'The Victors', within 10 seconds. He brought a large number of 'gold pants' to the show, referencing Michigan's victory over Ohio State, and displayed a 'Still Can't Beat Michigan' blue shirt during his debut.
Despite the boos from the crowd, Portnoy made it clear that he is not there to troll Ohio State fans, but to root for the Big Ten. He responded to the boos by saying that Ohio State's national title means nothing to them.
Urban Meyer, who has a history of defeating Michigan, attempted to get Portnoy to chant 'O-H-I-O', but Portnoy remained steadfast in his support for the Wolverines. Meyer presented Portnoy with a No. 16 Buckeye football jersey with 'El Presidente' printed on the back as a gesture of good sportsmanship.
Fox college football analysts Brady Quinn and Mark Ingram II attempted to get Portnoy to start an Ohio State chant, but Portnoy joked about using the Buckeye-themed gift as toilet paper instead. Host Rob Stone made a joke about Portnoy's entrance affecting the security budget.
Portnoy will make regular appearances on the pregame show as part of the new partnership between Barstool Sports and Fox. He will continue to root for the Big Ten and provide his unique perspective on college football.
In recent years, Michigan football has defeated Ohio State in four consecutive seasons, a fact that Portnoy is no doubt proud of. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Portnoy's presence on the pregame show will impact the rivalry between the two schools. Michigan football will always go through Ann Arbor until Ohio State can beat them.
