Deceiving with an Artificial Intelligence Voice?
In an alarming incident reported by the police, an 82-year-old woman in Lichtenfels, Upper Franconia, received a call on Friday afternoon. The caller, claiming to be a police officer, falsely reported that the woman's daughter had caused a fatal accident and demanded a bail of 45,000 euros.
The voices of the relatives during the call were artificially generated using AI, with the scammer simulating the voice of the 82-year-old woman's daughter. The son, who was also called, heard his sister's voice in the background during the call. However, the family quickly recognised the scam and communicated with each other to identify the fraud.
The daughter confirmed the accident and the bail demand on the call, but the police have since confirmed that the accident involving the daughter did not occur. The method used to generate the AI voices was initially unclear, but the police are investigating the incident thoroughly.
Despite the police's efforts, they have not disclosed any information about potential suspects in the case. The investigation into the scam call is ongoing, and the family's quick action and communication played a crucial role in thwarting the scam.
The 82-year-old woman was prevented from paying the bail money due to the family's recognition of the scam. The police have encouraged all residents, especially the elderly, to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities and to report any suspicious calls to the authorities.
