German Automotive Industry Faces Significant Job Losses in Electromobility Sector

A new study by the ifo Institute and job platform Indeed has revealed a concerning trend in the German automotive industry, particularly in the electromobility sector. The study, published on September 8, 2025, analysed approximately 1.7 million online job advertisements from 2,400 companies from January 2018 to June 2025.

The findings show a dramatic decrease in open positions in the automotive industry, with a focus on electromobility. The number of open positions in this sector has dropped by 81%, relative to the end of 2023, indicating a significant slowdown in the structural change towards electromobility.

In contrast, 'brown' companies, those focusing on internal combustion engines, are advertising more open positions than 'green' companies. This trend is particularly dire for automotive suppliers, whose job advertisements have not recovered since the 2019 crash. In June 2025, there were approximately 82% fewer open positions at suppliers than in May 2019.

The study differentiates companies based on their patent portfolios in drive technology. As of June 2025, 'green' companies were seeking twice as many positions as they were at the end of 2023. However, this growth pales in comparison to the overall decrease in the industry.

Tesla and Dreame have been the standout companies in the German electric vehicle sector. Tesla employs around 2,000 engineers and technicians in Germany, while Dreame has hired over 1,000 employees for its planned production near Berlin.

The decrease in open positions in the automotive industry has been substantial. Overall, the number of open positions has dropped by two-thirds by June 2025 compared to the peak in August 2023. This decline suggests a challenging period for the industry, with the future of electromobility in Germany uncertain.

The study serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the industry as it transitions towards electromobility. As the demand for 'green' jobs decreases, it remains to be seen how the industry will adapt and recover.
