Decline in Success Rate of Canalization in Sweden Reaches 85%
The Swedish Gambling Authority, known as Spelinspektionen, is keeping a close eye on the market's channelization rate to better understand player behaviour and preferences. The current head of Spelinspektionen is Nils Andersson.
Before the Swedish gambling market's legalization in 2019, about half of the total gambling spending was going offshore. However, despite the legalization, the channelization rate has remained relatively low. In 2024, the channelization dropped slightly to 85% of the market total. This is in contrast to the Netherlands, where, even years after official legalization, almost a similar figure (50%) is cited for the portion of total gambling spending going offshore.
Despite the low channelization rate, the Spelinspektionen remains optimistic about the future. Camilla Rosenberg, the Spelinspektionen's boss, argues that the watchdog has been successful in stemming much of the targeted traffic against Swedish players. If a supplier's products appear on a non-Spelinspektionen licensed website accessible from Sweden, they risk losing their licenses.
Sweden has stringent criteria to hold not just licensees, but also suppliers accountable for their products appearing on non-Spelinspektionen licensed websites accessible from Sweden. The main issue is that player preferences may differ from what is currently offered in regulated games.
Interestingly, what gambling is going on offshore is incidental, meaning players find such websites and options themselves, rather than becoming the victim of active targeting. At least 96% of all Swedish gamblers have tried a licensed website at some point, which is lower than the 2023 figure of 86%.
In an effort to confirm channelization numbers ahead of the 2025 market survey, the Spelinspektionen is updating its methodology. The authority continues to track the market to ensure a safe and fair gambling environment for Swedish players.
