Decrease in Channelization Rate in Sweden by 1% in the Year 2024

In a recent study published by the Sweden gambling regulator Spelinspektionen (SGA) on Monday in 2024, a decrease in the channelization rate for the competitive market in Sweden was reported. The study, which focused specifically on the Swedish market, found a slight year-on-year decrease in channelization towards licensed offerings in 2024.

The new methodology for calculating the channelization rate utilizes player surveys and internet traffic analysis. The study, conducted by Spelinspektionen, had 5,767 respondents and identified 2,032 unlicensed websites.

The report, issued by Kyle Goldsmith from iGaming Business, did not specify the exact reason for the decrease in channelization rate. However, it did find that online casino was a particular pain point in terms of the illegal market, with an estimated channelization rate for online casino in the illegal market ranging between 72% and 82%.

Notably, the channelization rate for the competitive market in Sweden decreased to 85% in 2024, which was 1% lower compared to 2023. The report did not provide data for channelization rates beyond 2024.

The name of the person who conducted the remeasurement of the channeling rate for the Swedish gambling industry in 2024 is not publicly available. The SGA has tasked itself with developing a new method for calculating the channelization rate in an effort to better understand and address the issue of unlicensed gambling in Sweden.
