Deepening Trade Relations: Algeria Reaches Out to Kenya
In the heart of Algiers, the bustling Intra-African Trade and Investment Fair (IATF2025) is underway, marking the fourth edition of this monumental event. From September 4 to 10, the city plays host to exhibitions, summits, automotive shows, and dedicated forums for startups and sub-national governments.
During the opening ceremony, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune highlighted the nation's commitment to expanding trade with African countries within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Tebboune did not specifically name individual African nations, instead focusing on Algeria's ambition for broader continental integration and promising a new phase of intra-African trade.
Algeria's top export partners currently include Tunisia, South Africa, CoΜte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and Senegal. To boost trade with Kenya and other African nations, Algeria is intensifying efforts, as evidenced by Tebboune's meeting with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on the sidelines of the IATF2025.
Recognized for driving the continent's ongoing economic transformation, Algeria has committed to simplifying administrative procedures and strengthening financial sectors to better integrate with Africa's emerging single market. The nation has also pledged to support other African countries to deepen regional integration.
President Tebboune outlined measures to enhance Algeria's appeal to investors and trading partners, including regulatory reforms and infrastructure investments designed to improve continental connectivity. These efforts are aimed at increasing Algeria's modest share of intra-African trade, which was 2.2% in 2024, slightly up from 1.9% in 2022.
The IATF2025 reflects a broad-based effort to foster deeper commercial and cultural ties across the continent. Previous editions of the fair have generated over $100 billion in trade and investment deals, making it Africa's largest trade and investment event.
Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank, praised Algeria's role in African economic integration, noting the country's efforts to ensure a stable, transparent, stimulating, and attractive economic and institutional environment for investment.
As the IATF2025 continues, the spotlight remains on Algeria, a nation poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of intra-African trade and investment.
