Vandalism at National Necropolis of Riche: A Grave Affront to the Memory of the Great War

The National Necropolis of Riche, a significant site in the memory of the Great War and a UNESCO World Heritage site, has fallen victim to vandalism. The graveyard, located in the commune of Morhange, houses the remains of approximately 2,500 French soldiers who perished in August 1914 during the Battle of the Frontiers.

The vandalism, which occurred just days before the commemoration of the Battle of Morhange, has taken on a particular gravity due to its timing. Several crosses at the necropolis have been deliberately destroyed, causing deep indignation and great anger among local authorities.

Patricia Mirallès, the junior minister in charge of Memory and Veterans, denounced the vandalism and noted that a complaint will be filed. The mayor of Morhange, Christian Stinco, also expressed his dismay, posting information about the damage on Facebook.

The National Necropolis of Riche, inaugurated in 1924, is classified as a historical monument. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in recognition of its importance in the First World War's history. The necropolis is also significant due to its proximity to the battlefield, making it a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict.

The perpetrators of the vandalism remain unknown at this time. The authorities are urged to take swift action to ensure the preservation of this hallowed ground and to bring those responsible to justice. The desecration of this national necropolis is a grave affront to the memory of the fallen soldiers and to the French people as a whole.
