"Deion Sanders announces decisive quarterback switch - Former NFL quarterback expresses views on the move"
In a surprising move, coach Deion Sanders has chosen redshirt sophomore Ryan Staub as the starting quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes' game against Houston on Friday night. The decision came following Staub's impressive performance in the Buffaloes' 31-7 win over Delaware on Saturday.
Staub completed 70% of his passes, throwing for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the game against Houston. His performance did not go unnoticed, as football legend Deion Sanders praised him, calling him a "man of opportunity."
The starting quarterback position has been a topic of discussion, with Kaidon Salter starting the season opener and the Buffaloes' contest against the Fightin' Blue Hens. Salter completed 13-for-16 of his pass attempts against the Fightin' Blue Hens but only managed 102 yards through the air. In contrast, he completed 17-for-28 of his passes for 159 yards and a touchdown in the season opener.
The decision to bench Salter and start Staub has been met with interest, with Johnny Manziel discussing the move on the Nightcap podcast. Manziel, a former Heisman Trophy winner, suggested that players need to get out there and play to prove themselves, as live bullets are fired.
Ryan Staub has played only eight games in his three-year college career, starting just once. However, he has been waiting for his opportunity to start, despite the additions of Salter and another quarterback, Lewis.
It is important to note that Kaidon Salter transferred from Liberty to Colorado in December. Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders, who was previously mentioned as a starter for the Buffaloes, departed for the NFL franchise Cleveland Browns in the 2025 draft.
