Delay in canal construction on Mühlheimer Straße: project's completion pushed back to spring

The city of Offenbach is facing some unexpected hurdles in its ongoing central wastewater collection canal construction project, particularly on Mühlheimer Straße. The delays, which include the discovery of an uncharted power line and unusually heavy rainfall, have necessitated adjustments to the project's timeline.

So far, approximately six kilometers of canals with a diameter of two meters have been laid. The project aims to connect new residential areas like Bieber-Nord, the "An den Eichen" quarter, and Bürgel Ost to the existing sewage system. The wastewater from the laid canals flows to the collection canal on the Main and then to the wastewater treatment plant in Frankfurt-Niederrad.

The power line discovered during the construction work is not specified as to its origin or purpose. However, its presence required a rerouting before the canal work could continue, adding to the project's delays. The responsible entity for rerouting the undetected pipe in the Mühlheimer Straße construction project is typically the local municipal utility company or the public works department.

The unusually heavy rainfall has caused the soil to become waterlogged, making the construction work more difficult. This, coupled with the power line discovery, has led to an extended timeline for the project. The completion of the canal construction work is now expected to take an additional five and a half months, pushing the original end date from the end of November 2024 to the first quarter of 2025.

The construction work on Mühlheimer Straße, a 15-year endeavor, is part of a larger comprehensive project that began in 2007.
