Deliveries of Tesla's Model Y vehicles commence in China

The electric vehicle giant, Tesla, has started delivering the Model Y L in China, marking a significant expansion of its offerings in the country. This six-seat SUV variant, with a starting price of RMB 339,000 ($47,460), was launched on August 19.

Production of the Model Y L began in mid-2025 at the Giga Shanghai factory, with the first deliveries taking place around September 2 to September 11, 2025. The Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm, making it slightly larger than the five-seat Model Y.

In comparison, the five-seat Model Y, available in both rear-wheel drive and long-range all-wheel drive variants, has a length of 4,797 mm, a width of 1,920 mm, a height of 1,624 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. The rear-wheel drive variant features a 62.5-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack from CATL, while the long-range all-wheel drive variant boasts a 78.4-kWh battery pack from LGES. The two variants start at RMB 263,500 and RMB 313,500 respectively.

The Model Y L boasts an impressive CLTC range of 751 kilometers, 1 kilometer longer than the five-seat Model Y long range's 750-kilometer range.

Last week, Tesla saw a 21.36 percent increase in insurance registrations in China, with 12,500 units registered compared to the previous week's 10,300. The commencement of Model Y L deliveries is expected to further boost Tesla's sales in China.

Tesla is also planning to integrate DeepSeek in China to provide better AI voice interaction, enhancing the user experience for its customers.

It's worth noting that Tesla's retail sales in China totaled 40,617 units in July, a 12.14 percent decrease from the same period last year and a 33.94 percent decrease from June. August sales figures for Tesla in China are currently unavailable.

With the arrival of the Model Y L, Tesla continues to expand its electric vehicle offerings in China, providing customers with more choices and contributing to the growth of the electric vehicle market in the country.
