Delray Beach challenges FDOT's plan to eliminate pride intersection and potentially diminish funding
The City of Delray Beach is facing a potential financial impact of $60,226,026.50, as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has threatened to withhold funds in an ongoing dispute over a Pride-themed intersection.
The dispute, centred around the intersection at Northeast 2nd Avenue and Northeast 1st Street in Delray Beach, has led to the FDOT's threat to remove the rainbow-coloured markings by September 3. However, the FDOT's letter does not provide a specific deadline for the removal beyond this date.
The City of Delray Beach Commission has voted to move forward with an administrative hearing, scheduled for September 2, in Orlando. The hearing aims to contest the FDOT's decision to remove the Pride-themed intersection.
The FDOT's actions and threats are in response to the city's refusal to comply with the initial order to remove the intersection. The state transportation department has stated it would use "any appropriate method necessary" to remove the markings.
Yet, the FDOT has not specified what constitutes a violation in this context. If the markings are removed by the city, the city will be responsible for the bill. The administrative hearing will determine the fate of the Pride-themed intersection.
The FDOT has also warned that further violations could lead to state funds being withheld. A letter from FDOT to the City of Delray Beach mentions the possibility of withholding funds if there are more violations.
Despite the ongoing dispute, no details about the individuals involved in the decision to order the removal of the Pride-themed intersection were given. The administrative hearing is expected to provide clarity on the matter.
