Demonstrators in Nepal met with fatal gunfire from the country's police force during a rally against social media censorship, resulting in 17 deaths and over 400 injuries.
In the heart of Katmandu, Nepal, on Monday, September 8, a peaceful protest turned chaotic as law enforcement used force against demonstrators. The protesters were demanding the restoration of their favourite networks and were protesting against corruption.
Thousands of youths gathered in the streets early Monday morning, their voices echoing through the city. Among them were Ronish Regmi, a 20-year-old student, and Iman Magar, also 20. Both expressed their frustration over the government's use of force, claiming that live ammunition was used during the protests.
Regmi and Magar were unfortunately caught in the crossfire. Regmi was hit by a bullet and was immediately transported in an ambulance. Magar, too, was injured, losing part of his hand after being hit by a metal bullet.
The situation escalated when law enforcement prevented the procession from approaching the parliament. Reports suggest that they used tear gas, water cannons, batons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition against the protesters. Journalists from AFP and witnesses corroborate these accounts.
The violence resulted in tragic consequences. At least 17 people were killed, and over 400 were injured during the clashes. The government of Nepal had blocked 26 platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, X, and LinkedIn, last week, as they had not registered with the government within the given timeframe.
The search results do not contain information about who commanded the police on Monday to shoot at protesters against social media blockades and corruption. The injuries sustained by Regmi and Magar were a result of the clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
This incident has sparked anger and frustration among millions of users in Nepal, with many taking to the streets to voice their dissent. The situation remains tense in Katmandu, and it is hoped that a peaceful resolution can be found to address the concerns of the people.
