Designer Danny Kaplan's Manhattan residence serves dual purpose as a showroom, merging living and work spaces innovatively
Danny Kaplan Moves Showroom to NoHo, Manhattan
Danny Kaplan, a renowned designer, has relocated his showroom from Bushwick to the heart of Manhattan, at 417 Lafayette St, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10003. The space, which was previously an art gallery, now serves as a unique blend of living space and gallery.
The showroom occupies a full floor and is divided into a gallery area up front and private quarters in the back. Kaplan has made the space feel more residential by building walls, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors and clients alike.
In the gallery area, visitors can find a 12ft-long metal-framed dining table, perfect for hosting dinner parties. The built-in shelves are furnished with artwork collected from friends, adding a personal touch to the space.
Moving towards the private quarters, one enters the powder room, which features a playful resin mirror designed in collaboration with Joseph Algieri, along with chairs by Thomas Barger. The private bathroom shares a glass-block wall with the powder room and is done up in Zellige tiles by CleΜ.
Kaplan's private bedroom is not yet fully furnished, but it features a prototype of the 'Paravent' bed and one of Kaplan's dining tables. The 'bedroom' also boasts a wood headboard adorned with ceramic tiles, a prototype stainless-steel chair, and Kaplan's 'Triad' cafe table.
Danny Kaplan has created a site-specific architectural lighting element called 'Foxglove', which can be found in the showroom. Kassandra Thatcher plastered over 'Foxglove' after it was installed. Kaplan is experimenting with upholstered furniture and has a pair of corduroy armchairs in a conversation-pit-like space. However, he mentioned that the cushions of the armchairs need to be softer.
The landlords of buildings with such spaces are often unconventional, and this space, which is from another era, comes along rarely. The showroom is located between the Public Theater and Jean's restaurant and nightclub, making it a vibrant and lively location.
