A Glimpse into The Folio Society's Limited Edition of Jane Austen's Works

The Folio Society is set to publish a six-volume limited edition of Jane Austen's complete novels, and it promises to be a visual feast for readers. This exquisite collection, available from 9 September, comes encased in a beautiful box, designed by prize-winning graphic designer Emily Benton.

At the heart of this limited edition are the illustrations by Sarah Young, a printmaker and illustrator known for her unique blend of woodcut and linocut methods. Young has used these techniques to create a handmade aesthetic that complements the timeless nature of Austen's works.

The full-page frontispieces are crafted using woodcut, while the smaller, more intricate illustrations within each book are the result of Young's linocut mastery. Each book features a woodcut frontispiece, five linocut illustrations, and fifteen vignettes by Sarah Young, ensuring a visual treat for readers with every turn of the page.

The covers of these books are a work of art in themselves. They are encased in exquisitely woven silk and cotton covers, made by Stephen Walters, and the letters on the spines are set within oval cameos to complement the pattern design on the clothbound covers. The monograms on the spines, created by award-winning calligrapher Ruth Rowland, reference copperplate calligraphy and historical monograms from the 1700s, giving the set a classic yet contemporary feel.

Rowland, who worked on the series, expressed her privilege in being part of such a high-quality and thoughtfully produced collection. She used a pointed brush to add weight and legibility to the letters, giving the monograms a modern twist while still honouring their historical roots.

The text of the books includes introductions from esteemed authors such as Elena Ferrante, Sebastian Faulks, Lucy Worsley, Fay Weldon, Val McDermid, and Siri Hustvedt, offering readers insightful perspectives on Austen's works.

The books are printed on Munken Pure paper, with three gilded edges and each book comes with a ribbon marker, making them a delight to handle as well as to read. This limited edition set, priced at £925, is a must-have for any serious Jane Austen fan or book collector.

In conclusion, The Folio Society's limited edition of Jane Austen's works is a testament to the beauty and enduring appeal of Austen's novels. With its stunning illustrations, meticulously crafted covers, and thoughtful design, this set is sure to become a cherished addition to any book collection.
