Details on the demise of French streamer Jean Pormanove, who was frequently targeted by videoed mistreatment
In a shocking turn of events, an investigation has been launched following the death of Jean Pormanove, a well-known streamer, whose death was filmed live on the Australian platform Kick. The cause of JP's death remains undetermined, despite several interviews with people present at the time.
The Nice judicial police has been entrusted with the investigation, and an autopsy on JP has been ordered for Thursday. Meanwhile, the prosecutor has made "numerous seizures of materials and videos" as part of the investigation.
The streamer's death has raised concerns about the content on Kick, a platform that offers a more generous remuneration policy than its competitors. Viewers could interact with the streamers and offer them donations, allowing them to be remunerated for their violent content.
JP was filmed enduring physical and psychological humiliations, including strangulations, punches, water jets, and insults. His fellow streamer, Coudoux, who was in a wheelchair and under guardianship, was also regularly beaten.
The Lokal channel on Kick, which had hundreds of thousands of subscribers, featured these disturbing scenes. Kick has since banned the streamers who participated in the live broadcast of JP's death, pending the ongoing investigation.
Yassin Sadouni, Safine's lawyer, stated that all scenes of mistreatment were part of a script and that his client "was very friendly with the deceased." Gwen, Naruto's brother, also took part in the live streams and declared that the content was controlled and scripted. However, Naruto's lawyer declared that Naruto had "no responsibility" in JP's death.
JP mentioned sums of up to 6,000 euros in remuneration, while Coudoux mentioned amounts that could reach 2,000 euros. The Arcom, the regulatory authority for the digital sector, has been seized by the government, and an investigation is focused on determining the cause of JP's death.
The Arcom has identified a legal representative of Kick based in Malta, but there is no information indicating whether such a representative has ever requested the removal of content related to Jean Pormanove on the platform.
As the investigation continues, the tragic death of Jean Pormanove serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers and ethical questions surrounding live streaming platforms and the need for stricter regulations.
