Details surrounding the tragic demise of Jean Pormanove, a frequent target of broadcasted mistreatment as a French streamer
In a shocking turn of events, an investigation has been initiated following the death of French streamer Jean Pormanove, also known as JP, during a live stream on the Australian platform Kick. The autopsy, scheduled for Thursday, aims to determine the cause of his death.
The stream, which showed JP enduring physical and psychological humiliations, was broadcast on the Lokal channel, a popular platform with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The partners known as Naruto and Safine were featured in the videos, which also depicted another man, nicknamed Coudoux, who was disabled and under guardianship, being regularly beaten.
The Nice judicial police has made numerous seizures of materials and videos related to the investigation into JP's death. The Arcom, the regulatory authority for the digital sector in France, has also seized the Pharos platform to examine illegal contents and behaviours online.
The Australian platform Kick has since taken action, banning the streamers involved in the live broadcast pending the ongoing investigation. Mediapart reported that both JP and Coudoux had consented to participate in these videos, but the images also showed them cracking under the bullying they were subjected to.
The streamer's death occurred live on the Kick platform, with the video showing him lying motionless under a blanket in a bed. Earlier in the live stream, JP was the victim of violence from Naruto.
Following the tragic incident, Sarah El Haïry, the High Commissioner for Childhood, has called on parents to be extremely vigilant regarding online content. Clara Chappaz, the delegate minister in charge of Digital, also condemned the dissemination of violent images featuring JP on Twitter.
Naruto's lawyer has declared that Naruto had no responsibility in JP's death. Kada Sadouni, Naruto's lawyer, stated his intention to file a complaint after a cyberbullying campaign against him since Monday evening. Safine's lawyer, on the other hand, stated that Safine was very friendly with Jean Pormanove and that all scenes involving him were part of staged scenes.
The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) requested Kick.com in January 2023 to designate a legally responsible representative and a contact point for authorities as mandated by the Digital Services Act to ensure compliance with the act's obligations for transparency, accountability, and effective communication between authorities and online service providers.
The Nice prosecutor's office has confirmed the death of a 46-year-old man during a live stream, without specifying his identity. The streamer's death has sparked a wave of outrage and calls for action to address online bullying and the proliferation of violent content on streaming platforms.
