Developing Jurbarkas as a new inland cargo hub within Lithuania at Klaipėda Port
In a significant move for Lithuania's logistics system, the Klaipėda Port Authority and Jurbarkas District Municipality have signed a contract in 2021 to develop Jurbarkas Port. This modern and sustainable inland waterway cargo hub is strategically positioned in western Lithuania, along the Nemunas River, making it an important point for the development of sustainable cargo transportation by inland water routes.
Jurbarkas, with its long-standing traditions of river transport, is envisioned to become a key player in Lithuania's logistics network. The port's location in the Jurbarkas District ensures it is well-positioned to connect inland waterways with the country's logistics network.
Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, is involved in the development of Jurbarkas Port. He commented on the development, stating that it presents opportunities not only for grain transportation but also for grain storage at Jurbarkas Port.
The investment project for the development of Jurbarkas Port had already been prepared earlier. Klaipėda Port Authority is committed to investing a multi-million-euro sum into the project in the coming years. As a part of the agreement, Klaipėda Port Authority will operate one quay in Jurbarkas and has pledged to invest at least €1 million within the first three years for infrastructure and facilities preparation.
The agreement paves the way for the development of Jurbarkas as an inland cargo port. Shipping on the Nemunas River is a strategically important transport artery for Lithuania, and the port's development will further strengthen Lithuania's logistics system. The Nemunas River is an environmentally friendly alternative for cargo transportation, making it an attractive choice for sustainable transportation solutions.
The development of Jurbarkas Port is a significant step towards creating a modern, sustainable, and efficient logistics system in Lithuania. With the support of the Klaipėda Port Authority, Jurbarkas is set to become a modern and sustainable inland waterway cargo hub, contributing to the growth and development of Lithuania's logistics sector.
