Development of Tesla Roadster continues, but release date remains elusive, according to Lars Moravy
Tesla's Next-Generation Roadster Still in Active Development
Tesla's highly anticipated next-generation Roadster is still in active development, according to Lars Moravy, the company's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering. Moravy, who last worked on the Roadster on a Tuesday in 2019, confirmed that the vehicle is coming to market.
The Roadster, unveiled in November 2017 during the Tesla Semi event, has faced multiple delays since its initial expected launch in 2020. The delays are attributed to Tesla focusing on scaling production of the Model 3 and Model Y, developing the Cybertruck and Semi, supply chain constraints, the COVID-19 pandemic, and broader engineering commitments.
Despite the delays, the Roadster is expected to be a game-changer in the electric vehicle market. It is expected to have a 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed of over 250 mph, and a 620 mile range. These specifications would make it the fastest production car in the world.
Tesla is also working with SpaceX on the Roadster's cold gas thrusters, a feature that was first revealed by Moravy. The "SpaceX package" for the Roadster, which includes these thrusters, is still part of the development.
For those interested in purchasing a Tesla, there is a referral programme that offers benefits. Using the referral link can get three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) when buying a Tesla. Some Tesla owners who participated in the referral program during the early years are expecting to receive two free Roadsters.
Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, previously stated that the Roadster's design had been finalized and would be unveiled at the end of 2024, with the first deliveries starting in 2025. However, it is important to note that Moravy did not provide a release date for the Roadster in the interview.
The Roadster's development is a testament to Tesla's commitment to innovation and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the electric vehicle industry. As the company continues to refine the Roadster's design and technology, electric vehicle enthusiasts eagerly await the release of this high-performance vehicle.
