The city of Iserlohn, Germany, is taking a significant step towards digitization in its administration with the introduction of a digital option for resident parking permits. This move is aimed at addressing the city's operational needs, particularly its shortage of skilled workers.

Christian Eichhorn, the department head of the city administration, expressed his satisfaction with this further step towards digitization. He emphasized the need for digitization to streamline processes and ensure the city remains operational.

Starting from January 1st, 2024, citizens will be able to apply for the permit electronically via the city's service portal. The online application assistant allows for the upload of proof documents required for fee exemption.

Once the application is processed, a database comparison using the vehicle's license plate will be made to check if a parking permit is valid. If a parking permission is not found, a warning will be issued electronically without marking the vehicle. Corresponding notices in case of a warning can be reacted to conventionally as well.

If a vehicle is found to have a valid permit, an approval notice with an invoice will be sent. The resident parking permit will be activated upon receipt of payment, either annually at 90 euros or semi-annually at 58 euros.

In addition, those who receive such a notice can use a QR code for the online appeal or pay the "fine" using online banking. The traffic department's monitoring staff will use a reading device to record parked vehicles during inspections.

Notably, no physical ID card needs to be placed behind the windshield of the vehicle. This digital solution is a step towards process simplification in the city administration, aiming to make the city's operations more efficient.

Eichhorn is optimistic about the benefits this digital solution will bring, stating, "This digital option will not only help us address our shortage of skilled workers but also simplify processes for our citizens."
