Digital towel debate ignites on Mallorca, stirring up controversy

==============================================================

The sun-kissed islands of Mallorca are known for their pristine beaches, but a new digital era has arrived, causing a stir among locals and critics. The introduction of the "Digital Towel" system is transforming the traditional beach experience, bringing both excitement and controversy.

The Digital Towel system is an innovative approach to organising beach spots on Mallorca, replacing the time-honoured towel-laying practice. This change marks a significant shift in beach visits, with sunbathers now able to reserve loungers and umbrellas online.

However, the digitalization of beach spots has not been met with universal approval. Local politicians and critics voice concerns that this regulation undermines the character of beaches as a public good. Their criticism focuses on data privacy, potential surveillance, and the impact on personal freedoms.

The digitalization of beach spots is dividing opinions on the island. Some celebrate the Digital Towel system as progress, while others feel excluded. The controversy stems from the effective privatization of public beaches through digital reservations, causing much dissatisfaction among those who value the spontaneity and accessibility of traditional beach visits.

Municipalities, on the other hand, hope for additional revenue and more efficient beach management with the digitalization. Platforms like the "Beach Manager" are used for booking beach spots on Mallorca, with many hotels securing exclusive contingents in the best locations and offering them to their guests.

Visitors may find themselves having to search for a long time to find a free beach spot that isn't reserved. Empty loungers with red plastic bands and the sign "Reserved" are common sights on Mallorca's beaches. Those who want to sunbathe in the front row by the water may have to pay up to 50 euros and more.

Prices for beach loungers on Mallorca start at around 18 euros per day for a standard set with two loungers and an umbrella. Operators offer additional paid services such as cushions, towels, or lockers. Time constraints of the portals, some being only accessible at night, hinder flexible planning.

The beaches of Santa Ponça, Alcúdia, and others have implemented the Digital Towel system. As the summer season approaches, the debate continues, with both sides passionately advocating for their respective views. Only time will tell how this digital revolution will shape the future of beach visits on Mallorca.
