Digital Transactions Facilitated at the Road Traffic Office: Convenient Online Conversion of Driving Licenses Issued Between 1959 and 1964

The Rhein-Kreis is set to activate an online portal for driver's license exchange in the third calendar week of 2023, marking a significant step forward in modernising the process. This service, developed in collaboration with ITK Rheinland and the Bavarian Municipal Data Processing Center (AKDB), is now available for driver's license holders born between 1953 and 1964.

The transition to the new driver's licenses is happening in stages, by year of birth. For those born between 1965 and 1970, the online portal will be activated in the same calendar week of 2023. All driver's licenses issued before January 18, 2013, must be exchanged for the new uniform EU card driver's license by 2033.

The online exchange process offers several advantages. It is faster than applications made in person, with shorter processing times, and it can be done from the comfort of one's home through the Rhein-Kreis's website at www.rhein-kreis-neuss.de. Customers will be notified when their specific year group's online service becomes available.

Ulrike Holz, a representative from the Rhein-Kreis, explains that online applications are prioritised for faster processing. Once the application is approved, customers will be notified when their driver's license is ready for pickup. Driver's license pickup requires personal attendance at the Citizen Service Center in Neuss or Grevenbroich county houses.

It's important to note that the law requires an identity check during driver's license pickup. The new driver's licenses are produced by the Federal Printing Office in Berlin.

For those born before 1953, the deadline for exchanging old driver's licenses is January 18, 2033. The online exchange for driver's license holders born after 1964 is expected to be expanded in the future.

The Rhein-Kreis encourages all eligible residents to take advantage of this convenient and efficient online service for their driver's license exchange. Stay tuned for updates on the expansion of the service to additional birth years.
