Director of 'Frankenstein' explains true purpose behind creation of his recent film
In the world of cinema, the classic tale of Frankenstein has been reimagined once more, this time under the visionary direction of Guillermo del Toro. The film, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel published in 1931, promises to delve deep into the complexities of humanity.
Del Toro, known for his intricate and thought-provoking storytelling, has been captivated by the creature of Frankenstein since his childhood. The lead actor of this highly anticipated film is Oscar Isaac, who brings to life the enigmatic Dr. Frankenstein.
In a time where artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives, del Toro is not afraid to explore its implications in his adaptation. However, he clarifies that the movie is not a metaphor for AI, but rather a reflection of the human condition.
Del Toro emphasises that the film aims to portray imperfect characters and the right we have to remain imperfect. In his version, the creature is played by Jacob Elordi, locked in a deadly feud with his creator, Oscar Isaac's Dr. Frankenstein.
The director points out that we live in a time of terror and intimidation, and Frankenstein serves as a mirror to these sentiments. It explores the right we have to understand each other under oppressive circumstances, and the importance of empathy in a world that often seems divided.
Del Toro, after completing the film, stated that he is in a state of postpartum depression, a testament to the emotional depth he has poured into the project. He believes that the movie is about humanity, and there's no more urgent task than to remain, in a time where everything is pushing towards a bipolar understanding of our humanity.
In essence, Frankenstein is not just a retelling of a classic story, but a timely and thought-provoking exploration of what it means to be human in a world that is constantly evolving.
