Disagreement arises concerning Kituyi's nomination as the spokesperson for the opposition party
United Opposition Coalition Faces Internal Strife
The United Opposition coalition, a formidable alliance led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and other opposition figures, is facing internal strife. The dispute centres around the appointment of Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as the coalition's spokesperson and the balance of leadership within the coalition.
Dr. Kituyi, unveiled as the head of the coalition's secretariat and official mouthpiece last week, has been tasked with streamlining opposition communication and rallying support across the country. However, his appointment has not been accepted by Cleophas Malala, the Deputy Party Leader of Democracy for Citizens.
Malala argues that the opposition must embrace younger leadership. His stance echoes a similar call from within the coalition, but Gachagua urges Malala to appreciate the balance between youthful energy and experienced leadership. Gachagua believes that the opposition needs someone with experience to guide and mentor the youth leaders driving their agenda to succeed.
The dispute has been compounded by disagreements over the November Malava Constituency by-election, where both DCP and DAP-Kenya have insisted on fielding their own candidates despite calls for a united front. This potential division within the coalition could potentially weaken their chances against President Ruto in 2027.
Before Dr. Kituyi's candidacy as speaker of the merged opposition alliance, Wycliffe Oparanya expressed opposition, citing concerns about the unity and representation within the coalition. Gachagua, however, maintains the coalition remains intact, but Malala's defiance points to early cracks in the quest to forge a united opposition strong enough to challenge President Ruto in 2027.
Rigathi Gachagua maintains that Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi is the right man to steer the coalition's agenda. He urges Malala to appreciate the importance of experienced leadership in guiding the youthful energy that drives the opposition's agenda. Gachagua also urges Malala to appreciate the balance needed to ensure the coalition's success in the upcoming elections.
The unity of the United Opposition coalition is crucial in the face of the upcoming elections. The coalition has agreed on one candidate to face President William Ruto in 2027, but the internal strife could potentially jeopardise their chances. The opposition leaders must find a way to bridge their differences and present a united front against the incumbent president.
