In the heart of London, a new theatrical experience has been making waves - "Elvis Evolution". Announced in 2024 by an unspecified company, the production has since moved to ExCel London, promising an immersive journey through the life of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. However, the production's origins remain somewhat murky, with no direct connection found to Baz Luhrmann's Elvis projects.

The show, produced by Layered Reality - the same team behind The Gunpowder Plot and Jeff Wayne's The War of The Worlds - is a unique blend of immersive design, live actors, musicians, and selective technology. However, it seems that not everyone is finding the experience as captivating as intended.

Lizzie Ward, one of the attendees, described it as a low-quality theatrical performance and attempted to secure a refund. Another visitor, Paige Rannigan, who has epilepsy, was surprised to find no strobe light/flash warnings. Rannigan left the show in tears, feeling it was not what was advertised.

Mark and Tracey Baldwin, who attended with VIP tickets, were left feeling "frustrated, disappointed, and angry". They claimed the show was "absolutely atrocious" and believe they were scammed, stating that Layered Reality exploited older people and should offer refunds and apologies.

Despite these criticisms, Layered Reality has maintained that the safety and security of the public and their team is their highest priority. They have also created a detailed FAQs section on their website to address potential issues during the experience and how to contact them for accommodations.

The show takes audience members on a journey through Elvis's youth, with a childhood friend Sam Bell providing insights. It also features a re-creation of the 1968 comeback special concert.

Critics have offered a mixed reception to "Elvis Evolution". TimeOut gave it three stars, stating it was "made with care" and "enjoyable once you accept it for what it is". However, The Telegraph described the show as having "limp and indifferent offerings", while CityAM called it "incredibly touching".

Some shows have been cancelled for security reasons after an attendee became verbally aggressive towards staff and refused to leave the venue. In response, Layered Reality has clarified that "Elvis Evolution" is not a traditional concert or hologram show, but a major-scale theatrical experience that reconnects people with Elvis in a bold and meaningful way.

Tickets for "Elvis Evolution" range from £75 to £300. The show is set to run at ExCel London until December, but plans for a move to Las Vegas, Berlin, and Tokyo have yet to be confirmed.

Despite the controversy, "Elvis Evolution" continues to attract visitors, offering a unique and immersive experience for fans of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Whether you're a die-hard Elvis fan or just looking for a night out, this theatrical experience promises to be a memorable one.
