Zverev experiences another disappointing Grand-Slam setback - "Disappointing Performance": Zverev encounters another setback in a major tennis tournament
In a disappointing turn of events, world number three tennis player Alexander Zverev has been knocked out of the US Open in the pre-quarterfinals. This early exit marks a significant setback for the German player who was aiming to claim his first Grand Slam title.
The match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, which lasted an exhausting 3 hours and 48 minutes, proved to be Zverev's undoing. A crucial moment in the second set saw a net cord bounce over Zverev's racket, helping Auger-Aliassime to level the set. This turning point seemed to shift the tide of the match in Auger-Aliassime's favour.
Zverev's performance was far from his best. He struggled with a lack of feel in his forehand and backhand throughout the match, and his self-confidence appeared to be lacking. The German player was often too passive in crucial moments, a tactical error that has been criticized for years.
The dream of a Grand Slam title for Zverev has once again been dashed, despite his impressive quarterfinal appearances in his last four appearances at the US Open. Zverev has not yet won a Grand Slam title, and this year has been described as "terrible" by himself.
Frustration boiled over for Zverev as he angrily threw his racket to the ground after minor mistakes. This outburst was a stark contrast to the composed demeanour Zverev usually displays on the court.
Zverev's next tournament will be the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, which takes place from September 25 to October 1, 2025. However, his participation in the Laver Cup from September 19 to 21 remains uncertain, as he recently withdrew from the Davis Cup with the German selection on September 12 and 13 in Tokyo against Japan.
The future of Zverev's coaching partnership with Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's uncle and successful coach, also remains uncertain. Nadal did not travel with Zverev during the US Open.
As Zverev prepares for his next tournament, he will be looking to regain his form and confidence, with the ultimate goal of claiming that elusive Grand Slam title.
